The village

The houses stand about the green. You arrive at the near end, where the Village Hall sits with its gable to the road and the field opening behind. The Heritage Centre is the stone building with the porch — formerly the school — and the tourist information point is inside. The church stands a little above, with the churchyard falling away toward the trees. In the middle of the green there is grass, a bench, and the box of the old kiosk, which is no longer a telephone.

The Colliery Inn faces the green from the far side. It is a handsome frontage and is presently closed for refurbishment. Rooms, when they are available, are at Forest View and, in summer, on the field behind the hall. Parking is at the hall, which keeps the green clear for walking and for Sunday tea.

There is no shop. Milk, bread and a paper are more readily found in Falstone. The tourist information point is inside the Heritage Centre. When the centre is shut, current papers are clipped to the outer board, which is on the centre wall and can be read at any hour. There is no public telephone in the village. Useful numbers are listed here. Mobile coverage is patchy in the trees and below the church, as it is through much of this forest, and a plan made before you leave the hall will serve you better than a call made on the trail.
