The green

The green is the open ground the houses stand about, and it is the first thing you see when you arrive. Grass, a bench, the box of the old kiosk. The hall is at the near end as you come in, with its gable to the road. The Heritage Centre porch faces the grass. The church stands a little above. The inn faces from the far side and is closed for refurbishment; the frontage is unchanged. In summer the grass is kept. In autumn the same grass holds the first of the larch. It is a small green, and it is the heart of a visit.

Parking is at the hall, which keeps the green for walking and for Sunday tea. It is a place to sit. The tourist walks leave from here. The Green Man Trail starts at the porch and returns by the hall, which is a different way, and that is the pleasure of it. On Gathering day the same grass takes the overflow from the hall, and the tea is a larger table. On an ordinary Sunday, when tea is held, it is the same grass you walk across to the door.

There is no shop on the green. There is no public telephone. The cottage with the red sign is the sub-office, two mornings. Provisions are more readily found in Falstone. The outer board is on the centre wall and can be read at any hour. Beyond the far end the old approach continues to Seldom Seen, a short row still occupied. There is no turning place there. Reverse at the hall.
