From the church

Last updated: 9 May 2005

The gravel from the churchyard is the usual way down. It is a short descent, and it is steeper than it looks from the green. Keep to the stones; the edges hold leaf in autumn and are slippery after rain. The lower gate is not always unbolted, so this is the way in any case. Several of the older stones lean as you pass them. They have leaned for a long time.

The carving is behind you in the chancel if the church was open. The face looks a little aside, as such faces do, and the leaf around it is the last of the stone you carry down. The bellcote, from the path, is already a small thing. Names in the yard are also found on the mining memorial; the two are not a complete roll.

The path comes out at the green between the hall and the centre. Sit at the bench before you go on. Sunday tea, when it is served, is at the hall, a few yards further. Rubbings are not permitted in the yard or from the carving; a photograph from the gravel will do, if the light is kind.

Other short returns to the green are kept: from the rows, from the rides, and from the water. Each comes out at the same bench.
