From the rows

Last updated: 26 March 2006

The older rows are not marked for visitors. Stone Row, Shop Row, Wood Row and Tile Row stood along the waggonway, with the chapel at the west end. The gallery has the photographs. On the ground you are walking the present village, which dates from the years when those rows were taken out. The names remain in the talk of the place.

From the older ground the way back is across what is now the green. The memorial garden is the place from which the working is shown; Slater’s Incline is a cut in the bank from there, and is not a walk. The hall gable is what you are walking toward. It is not the pit.

The bench on the green is the first seat of the present layout. Sit there. The rows that were taken out are behind you, which is to say they are not there. A longer account is under the older rows.

Other short returns to the green are kept: from the church, from the rides, and from the water. Each comes out at the same bench.
