The carving

In the chancel of the parish church is the Green Man: a stone face set in leaf, looking a little aside, as such faces do. It is the figure from which the trail and the summer gathering take their name, and it is one of the reasons people come. It is inside the church, not in the yard. The light from the south window finds it in the afternoon.

Visitors are asked not to touch the carving, and not to make rubbings; the stone is old enough. A card is sold at the centre when the centre is open, and it is a good card. We cannot send it by electronic mail. The church is open when the key is at the Heritage Centre, and at other times as announced on the board.

Stories of the woods are still told at the Gathering, when they are offered, alongside the story of the pit. We do not offer a scholarly account. The face is the face, and the walk is the walk.
