From the rides

Last updated: 2 December 2005

Rides that fall toward the village come out behind the hall. They are the wet way in. Sitka and larch take the higher ground; the last of the ride is often needles and standing water, even in a dry week. Follow the marked line if there is one. Forestry vehicles have the right of it. The eastern continuation is not this return; if the line becomes indistinct, the stile is the place to turn.

The sound of the forest does not stop at the fence. A party still in the trees is a murmur. Boots will be wet. The committee does not insist that they come off before the grass, but the green is kept in summer and it is a kindness. Ticks are present in season; ordinary care on the legs is enough.

You come out facing the hall, with the centre porch to the right. The bench is the first dry slat, or as dry as it is. It holds the weather of the last walk. See the forest and the Green Man Trail for the line out; this note is only for the line back.

Other short returns to the green are kept: from the church, from the rows, and from the water. Each comes out at the same bench.
