The mining gallery

The mining gallery is the main room of the Heritage Centre, in the former school, and it is the indoor heart of a visit. Dates used on the labels are those listed under Dates. They are not a complete chronology. A print of the memorial garden is shown; the garden itself is outside, on the way to the church, and the two are worth taking together.

There are tools, photographs, a model of the pit-head as it stood, and a copy of a working timetable from the Border Counties years. Plans of the Plashetts seam are on the long wall. A flame lamp of the pattern used under the local rule stands in the case by the day-books. A portrait of J. Slater hangs on the stair as you go up. The canary room is a working room at the rear of the house, not in this gallery; ask at the desk. Trail leaflets and the printed card of the church carving are sold when stocks allow. The gallery is open only when the desk is staffed. Hours are those of the centre, not the daily hour given as a general guide on the home page. Allow an hour if you like to read labels, and a little longer if you mean to sit.
