Dates

The following dates are those we use in the gallery and in the leaflet. They are not a complete chronology. They will serve for a first visit, and for placing the photographs.

1861

First sod of Plashetts Colliery, Whit Monday.

1862

Border Counties Railway through the valley. Station and waggonway in use.

1914

Highest recorded employment at the pit and brickworks.

1926

Flooding of the workings. Limited drift working thereafter.

1956–58

Station closed to passengers; line closed.

1964

Colliery closed by the National Coal Board.

1960s

Several older rows taken out of use. The present village layout dates from this period. See the older rows.

1981–82

Kielder Water completed in the valley.

1999

This website established by the Parish Tourism Committee.

2001

Heritage Centre opened in the present building (the former school). The museum collection was moved here; see the museum.
