The building society

Last updated: 19 January 2006

The building society keeps a morning at the post office counter, on the green. Thursday, from ten until half past twelve. It is not a branch in the town sense, and it is not a bank. Passbooks, a paying-in, the ordinary agency work. We do not take savings enquiries at the Heritage Centre. The clerk is not always the same clerk as the post.

The agency counter

The counter, Thursday. The post-office side of the same room is to the left. Photograph supplied by the agency; the clock is fast.

If you need a larger office, Hexham is the ordinary town for that. There is no cashpoint in the village, and the agency is not a cash machine. A paying-in can be done on the Thursday morning if you have the book. New accounts are not opened here as a matter of course; ask at the counter, which will tell you what can be done.

The post office itself is Tuesday and Thursday, nine until twelve. The agency begins after the first hour of that Thursday, which is how the room is shared. Letters for the society should not come to this office. There is a step at the door. Leave the car at the hall.
