Wind

Last updated: 14 February 2006

The prevailing wind is from the south-west, as it is through much of this forest. It is in the canopy more often than on the green. The school porch is in the lee of the building, which is why a still day at the desk is not always a still day on the rides. We write what we have at the porch. Walkers will find the rest for themselves.

The trees take it. Sitka and larch on the higher ground move when the green does not. A party fifty yards off in the rides is a murmur; in a wind it is less than that. The forest fence on the main trail is a companion in that weather as in any other. Hats should be considered, and then considered again at the second stile.

The hall had a vane. It was taken down in 2004 and has not been put back. We have not missed it for the book. Still is still judged by the trees beyond the porch, and by whether the grass on the green is moving. On 14 February 2006 there was wind in the trees and no rain at the desk; the rides were reported wet, which is a different question. See the record.

The inn frontage takes more of the valley than the porch does. It faces the green and is presently closed. The wind has not closed it. For the woods themselves see the forest. For the open grass, the green.
