The taxi
Last updated: 3 March 2006
There is no rank. The taxi is a private hire from a house on the old approach toward Seldom Seen: J. Charlton. A card in the window. It is not an office in the ordinary sense. There is no turning on that road; reverse at the hall. The kiosk on the green is not a telephone, and you cannot ring from there.

The house, from the old approach. The card is in the lower window. Photograph from a winter afternoon; the car is the present one.
Telephone: 01669 000000. Leave a message. He knows the Hexham connection and the Bellingham shop run, and he will sometimes take a missed request-stop if you have left word. It is not a twenty-four-hour service. Evenings are the usual time, and the station if the train is a sensible one. A fare to Hexham is a long fare; the bus is the ordinary continuation. Share if you are going the same way.

This office does not take bookings for it. Ask at the house, or telephone. In winter he will sometimes wait at the hall if the last bus has been thin; that is a kindness, and it is not a timetable. Mobile coverage is poor in the trees. A plan made before you leave will serve you better than a call made on the trail. See Useful Numbers.
