Older maps

Printed OS sheets and older guidebooks of the valley are of interest, and several are shown in the gallery. They are not, on their own, a sufficient guide to the present turning. Maps of different dates place the name Plashetts at slightly different points along the valley, as maps of a working district will. Some still show a through sign from the north that is no longer there. Some show a station. The station closed in 1958; the story is told under the railway.
The sketch issued with our leaflet is not an OS sheet and is not reproduced here. Numbered points on that sketch are listed under Map. The list will not scale, and an older sheet will not scale onto the present village.
If the name on your map sits toward the water, you are looking at a sheet of the valley in an earlier state. Kielder Water was completed in 1981–82 and is now the great water of the district. The village served by this office is approached as in Getting Here. A longer account of the name is under a note on the name.
Visitors coming from Kielder should not rely on older sheets for the turning. See from the north.
