Location and access

The field is not signed from the public road. Arrival is by the hall gable. The old approach has no turning circle; vehicles reverse at the hall. The operator’s instruction is that cars remain at the hall and are not taken onto the grass, the green, or the old approach. That instruction was posted nowhere on the field at the date of visit. It appears on the operator’s public pages and is repeated at the Heritage Centre desk when the desk is staffed.

  • Nearest classified road: the valley road through Falstone toward Kielder. No through brown sign from the north is recorded in the Authority’s tourism signing file.
  • Public transport: request-stop bus. Frequency was not verified. There is no public telephone on the green. The former kiosk remains as a box only.
  • Pedestrian access from the hall door is level for approximately eight metres, then grass. There is a step at the hall door itself.
  • The stile at the tree end gives onto a ride. It is not a dedicated camp access and is not maintained as one. The tread is worn and one rail is loose (see assets).
  • Emergency vehicle access is limited to the hall parking. A pumping appliance could not be taken onto the field without crossing grass of uncertain bearing capacity after rain.
