Fire safety
Fires are not permitted. There is no fire point, no extinguisher on the field, no water tank, no alarm, and no posted fire action. The present expectation for a camping site remains that in the Authority’s standard conditions and in HSG 92. Those expectations are not met.
- No fire-fighting equipment was found on the field or at the hall elevation facing the field.
- No assembly point is marked. The green, on the far side of the hall, would be the practical open ground if it were designated. It is not.
- Tent separation is not marked. At the 2002 peak of nine tents, six-metre spacing cannot be assumed.
- Cooking is presumed to be by camping stove. That is not written. Spirit and gas stoves on dry grass in July are the principal ignition source.
- The adjoining forestry is a fuel load. No discussion with the Forestry Commission of a firebreak or of a contact number for a grass fire was on the licensing file.
- Means of calling the fire service: no public telephone. Mobile coverage was not surveyed. The Heritage Centre telephone is not a 24-hour number.
Finding 6 — fire
A written fire risk assessment for the seasonal use was not produced. Equipment, spacing, water, and a means of calling assistance are all absent. This should be treated as an immediate recommendation, not as a matter for the next season only.
