Environmental survey — habitats and trees

This is not a Phase 1 habitat survey. Observations are those made on 12 February 2003, outside the growing season and outside the camping season. The field is improved or semi-improved grass, mown or grazed to a short sward at the hall end and longer toward the trees. No wetland indicator was in leaf. Standing water was not present on the day; the ground was wet at 40 mm with a boot.

  • Trees at the far end are the first of the rides: mixed conifer with some broadleaf at the edge. Roots and drip-line occupy a strip of the usable area. No tree work is the operator’s. Any work would be the Forestry Commission’s or the occupier’s as the boundary falls.
  • No veteran tree was identified on the field itself.
  • No watercourse crosses the field. Drainage is by soak and by a slight fall toward the trees.
  • Protected species: no survey. Bats, red squirrel, and ground-nesting birds are all possible in the parish. A seasonal camping use of short grass is a limited additional pressure if numbers remain at the design figure.
  • Invasive species: none recorded on the walkover.
  • Litter and fire scars: none found in March. That is not evidence of the July condition.

Green Finding 8 — habitat

Nothing observed requires the use to stop on nature-conservation grounds at the present scale. A licence, if issued, should include a condition that the tree strip is not pitched and that no cutting is undertaken without the adjoining occupier’s agreement.
